CGS announces death of Founder.
The Board and Faculty of The Center for Group Studies sadly announces the death of our founder and mentor, Dr. Louis R. Ormont on November 15, 2008. His loss will be deeply felt by the hundreds of people who worked with him as well as the thousands of students who knew him through his lively and energetic writings, which were filled with delightful and humorous vignettes.
Lou dedicated his life to the field of modern group process, of which he was a masterful practitioner. He advocated that "those successful in group are successful in life". His several books and over 25 papers on technique taught how working in group provides opportunities for growth and character change not readily available in individual treatment. Over 40 years ago, he pioneered a practice of seeing people only in group treatment and trained hundreds of therapists in his training groups, supervision groups and classes.
Lou provided the vision and drive to build what was originally named The Center for the Advancement of Group Studies, currently called The Center for Group Studies. It continues as the first free-standing training program devoted solely to the teaching of modern group process. Lou was committed to expanding the training of modern group process to all those working with groups, including educators, administrators, clergy, health care workers and others. He deeply believed in nurturing natural talent regardless of traditional credentials.
In addition to Lou's expertise in the fields of psychology and psychotherapy, he was strongly influenced by theater and Buddhism and integrated these interests into his practice.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his wife and colleague, Dr. Joan Ormont and their family.
