Staff Development Training and Outreach

The Center for Group Studies offers training programs tailored to meet the specific needs of your organization or agency.

One Year Program in Group Leadership

This program is designed for students working with groups in educational, religious, health, arts and business settings. Coursework covers the foundations of Modern Analytic theory and technique. Students are expected to complete a minimum of 20 sessions of a personal group experience. Completion of this program is a prerequisite for entry into the Two Year Program. Students learn how to:
• facilitate use of the “here and now” experience in developing meaningful relationships
• work through obstacles blocking emotional communication
• recognize and utilize the powerful feelings inherent in any group
• help members become vital, effective group participants
• recognize psychopathological behavior

Two Year Program in Group Analysis

This program is a continuation of the One Year program and provides advanced training in working with groups in clinical settings and deals in greater depth with countertransference and working with pre-oedipal and difficult patients. It further explores areas of aggression in group work. Students in the Two Year Program are expected to complete a minimum of 60 sessions of a personal group experience. Students learn how to:
• harness aggression and use it as a powerful force to enhance progressive emotional communication
• translate the leader’s induced feelings into effective interventions that expand and deepen the group process
• resolve resistances, which free members to move toward emotional maturity
• develop therapeutic interventions in dealing with difficult-to-treat group members

The Weekend Program

This unique three year program attracts students from the tri-state region, across the United States and around the world. It provides an opportunity for students to participate in intensive learning environment. The program is comprised of:
• three learning weekends per year
• a reading program, in which the student works directly with a faculty mentor by e-mail or telephone
• supervision of group work

Staff Development Training and Outreach

The Center offers both short term and ongoing programs to community agencies, hospitals, educational organizations and businesses. These programs can be customized to the needs of your organization and may be conducted in the convenience of your own facility. For organizations outside our local region, we will arrange to visit your facility to provide intensive short term or ongoing training programs and supervisions. We have found that a good working model is a two day training offered 3-4 times a year. We are eager to work with your agency or group to design a program that best matches your needs.

Continuing Education

Continuing Education is available for working professionals who want to stay involved with training. We offer ongoing electives, specialized courses, distinguished guest lectures, a summer workshop program and supervision classes.
